You’ve been fighting off your cravings all day. But you can’t take it anymore. You need that bag of chips or that bar of chocolate. Why?

Cravings are your body’s way of telling you that it’s missing something. If you aren’t getting the proper nutrients or calories, you’re going to get cravings. And sometimes, they’re too strong to resist.

So, what are your cravings trying to tell you?

If you’re craving salty potato chips…

You may be dehydrated. Or you may need electrolytes, such as sodium and potassium. Try drinking a couple of glasses of water. Or try having a healthy and salty snack. Cucumbers with a bit of salt on them anyone? A banana? There are various ways you can quench this craving without eating a whole bag of chips.

If you’re craving chocolate…

You may need magnesium. This one is more common in women, and there’s a good reason why. During menstruation, magnesium is lost. For this one, go ahead and have a piece of dark chocolate. Try to avoid eating the whole bar. Just a little bit goes a long way! And if you still can’t shake it, try adding avocado to your next meal. These are high in magnesium with 29 mg in every 100 grams of avocado.

If you’re craving carbs…

You may be lacking an amino acid or you may not be getting enough sugar or carbs. You probably want pasta or bread. And if you’re wanting after these food items, your body might not be making enough of the amino acid, Tryptophan. This amino acid helps the body produce serotonin, which makes you feel good.

In addition, if you’re on a restrictive diet, your body might just be wanting more energy. Carbs and sugar are the body’s preferred sources of energy. It can produce usable energy efficiently and effectively from these food sources. Try increasing your sugar and calories. It could help.

If you’re craving meat…

You could be lacking protein or any of the minerals and nutrients commonly found in meat, such as iron, B12, or zinc. Have you had these nutrients lately? If you’re on a vegan or vegetarian diet, you may be lacking in this department. Make sure you find good meat replacements that are full of these types of nutrients and protein.

How Should You Handle Your Cravings?

Most of the time your body knows what it wants. Give into your cravings - but remember to eat mindfully and consciously. Eating a full back of chips or a ton of chocolate likely isn’t the best idea -- everything in moderation.

And change the way you think about your cravings. If you’re craving certain junk foods, try to understand why. Are you missing a key nutrient in your diet? Do your research and find out!
