Change Any Habit in 90 Days: Here’s How

Are you unsure how to build a habit?

Perhaps you want to make exercise a regular event. Or you want to improve your diet. You have intention. But you’re unsure how to implement it.

Changing your behavior comes down to altering the tiny habits in your life. It means making small changes and gradually building.

A lot of individuals make the mistake of trying to do too much at once. They become overwhelmed. And they give up.

But not you! Let’s dive into how to change a habit in just 90 days.

Where Do You Start?

As aforementioned, start small. Don’t begin going to the gym 3 times a week if you think it’ll be too much. Start with once. Or start with one exercise even. Give yourself a tiny starting point - one that you can build from. Eventually, you try a little bit more. Then, a little bit more. Soon, you’re going to the gym 3 times a week.

Another quick tip here involves changing your environment. Are you unmotivated at home to do an exercise routine? Get out of the house! Do you become tempted at lunch in the cafeteria? Eat at your desk or head outside. Break that habit cycle!

The habit cycle consists of the following:

Cue → Craving → Response → Reward

The key to breaking this cycle is by eliminating parts of it. For example, remove the cue. This may be removing yourself from the cafeteria at lunch. You can also eliminate the craving. Distract yourself or make it unappealing. Make the response a challenge. Don’t bring your wallet out with you, and then you won’t be able to buy anything.

Further, making commitments or promises to yourself can help you break this habit cycle. You can also find ways to replace this habit with a new and healthy one. And reward yourself when you complete these new and healthy habits. Reinforce them. Celebrate your small successes.

Start Small and Build

Tiny habit changes eventually lead to different behaviors. It all comes down to starting small and reinforcing the good stuff.

How can you build and stick to your healthy habits and goals?

1. Make Goals.

Where do you want to be in 3 months? Write it down. How will you get there? Write it down too. Stick to these goals. Perform the activities that will get you to these goals, and you’ll get there.

2. Consider Every Day a New Opportunity

You will make mistakes. But how you deal with those mistakes is more important. Do you let it throw you completely off track of your goals? Or do you take responsibility, come up with a game plan for next time, and get back on track? The choice is yours. Don’t let small mistakes derail you.

3. Every Little Bit Counts.

Celebrate every small win. Get an accountability partner. Put reminders around your home, office, and plug them into your phone.

4. Stay Positive.

Why are you getting healthy? This is your silver-lining. Keep looking forward - never back. Think you can and you will.
